Longshore and Harbor Injury

Staten Island Longshore & Harbor Worker Injury Attorney

If you were injured in an accident on Staten Island or in Brooklyn while working on land in vicinity of the water — as a longshore worker, dock worker, harbor worker, marine-construction worker, marine-terminal operator, or shipyard worker — you are covered under the federal Longshore and Harbor Workers Compensation Act. The same is true if you were hurt while loading ship cargo on land, repairing a vessel in drydock, or working ashore in the maritime industry. The act covers longshoremen and harbor workers.

Dock workers and longshoremen are covered for on-the-job injuries, including back, neck, knee, head and shoulder injuries, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Unlike most workers’ compensation claims, these cases are not handled by a state workers’ compensation board. They are administered by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP).

The rules and procedures for federal workers’ compensation claims differ from state claims. You need a law firm that understands the federal workers’ compensation system. At Helbock, Nappa & Gallucci, LLP, lawyers Robert J. Helbock Jr. and Joseph A. Nappa, understand the federal workers’ compensation system and will use our experience to get you the benefits you are entitled to. We have handled thousands of longshoremen and harbor worker injury cases before the U.S. Department of Labor (USDL).

If you are a shipyard worker, longshoreman or cargo handler who was injured on the job, call for a free consultation. You will pay no attorney’s fee or costs unless we win your case.

You must file a claim for your longshoreman’s injury with the Department of Labor within one year of the injury. Under the federal Longshore and Harbor Workers Compensation Act, you do not have to prove that your employer was at fault for your injury. Your benefits include medical compensation, disability compensation, and rehabilitation services.
